Vic: New scam targets ATM users
MELBOURNE, Aug 3 AAP - Victoria Police's major fraud squad is investigating a scamwhere Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) users are duped into revealing their pin numbers.
Victorian Police and Emergency Services Minister Andre Haermeyer today said the scamrevolved around a thin plastic sleeve, which is inserted into the ATM card slot and preventsthe machine from reading the card.
When the customer tries to retrieve their card from the ATM a stanger approaches offering help.
The stranger says the same thing happened to them and suggests that the ATM user re-entertheir PIN and hit the cancel button to retrieve their card.
"Fraudsters then peer over the user's shoulder or use a mobile phone video camera torecord the PIN," Mr Haermeyer said.
"When the card doesn't come out victims usually leave the machine.
"The perpetrator then pulls the plastic sleeve from inside the slot to retrieve thecard. With the PIN and the card, they steal money from the victim's bank account."
Mr Haermeyer warned ATM users to be vigilant.
"ATM users should avoid using their PINs when strangers are close by," he said.
