FED: South Korea s President Kim to visit Aust next month
South Korean President KIM DAE-JUNG is to make his first visit to Australia next month.
The visit, from September 15-18, will be the second in less than a week from a major Asian
power, with Chinese President JIANG ZEMIN due to visit from September 6-11.
Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD says the former political prisoner turned president will be
welcomed to Australia both for his commitment to democracy and as the leader of Australia's
third biggest trading partner.
Two-way trade between Australia and South Korea last year topped $10 billion, although
exports to Korea have been hit hard by the Asian financial crisis.
The visit comes at a time of rising tension in the region following incidents between North
and South Korea and threats of military clashes between China and Taiwan.
