FED:World-first project on rare cancers
MELBOURNE, Aug 26 AAP - Cancer researchers are targeting what they're calling the forgotten
cancers in a world-first project involving 30,000 Australians.
While the "big five" of lung, prostate, breast, bowel and skin cancer make up 60 per
cent of all diagnoses, more than half the cancer deaths in Australia are caused by less
common or under-researched types of the disease.
Cancer Council Victoria chief executive Todd Harper says these rare types, such as
liver, brain and bone cancer, are killers because little is known about their causes or
effective treatment.
"They don't attract the same level of funding support from mainstream support organisations,
yet generally the survival rates for these cancers is much poorer," Mr Harper said.
"We simply don't have the same level of knowledge about the early detection and causes
that we do with the more common cancers."
The Forgotten Cancers Project hopes to collect data from 15,000 participants - 1000
sufferers of each of the 15 rare strains - to build a research platform.
A further 15,000 people who have a family member suffering from a rare type of cancer
will also be targeted.
"We're looking at it as an opportunity to collect genetic information as well as behavioural
and lifestyle data from the people in the study," Mr Harper said.
"That will help us look at causes of these cancers, hopefully early detection and improvements
in treatment."
The Cancer Council launched the initiative, which it said was the first epidemiological-based
research project in the world focusing on less common cancers, on Friday to coincide with
the 25th anniversary of Daffodil Day, its largest annual fundraising event.
The 15 target cancers for the project are bladder, bone, brain, gallbladder, kidney,
leukaemia, liver, multiple myeloma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, oesophageal, pancreatic, small
intestine, stomach, thyroid and uterine cancer.
Some of these cancers have a survival rate below five per cent.

QLD:Swan welcomes banks "break-up"
By Gabrielle Dunlevy
GOLD COAST, Feb 15 AAP - Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan has welcomed a "scrap" among
the big four banks, saying it is a result of his government's moves to increase competition
in the sector.
The National Australia Bank (NAB) on Tuesday took out national newspaper advertisements
addressed to its rivals - the Commonwealth, ANZ and Westpac - saying "it's over between
us".
The mock break-up letter says the NAB and its competitors have "grown apart", with
the NAB saying it had done better than the others on interest rates, abolishing fees and
placing ATMs.
"It's terrific to see the NAB throwing down the gauntlet to the other banks, it's about
time they had a scrap, it's about time we had a bit of competition," he told reporters
on the Gold Coast on Tuesday.
"And largely I think this is coming about because the government has put a package
out there which encourages competition.
"We put some real markers in the ground and now we're starting to see some competition
coming in the sector."

FED: Friends defy bombers with breakfast
CANBERRA, Aug 3 AAP - Australian ex-pats in Jakarta have held a defiant breakfast tribute
at the JW Marriott hotel, the scene of one of the two Indonesian terrorist blasts last
month.
About 40 people - mostly friends and associates of murdered businessmen Craig Senger,
Nathan Verity and Garth McEvoy - gathered at the hotel to send a message to Indonesian
terrorists.
"(We are) letting people know that we are not scared," salvage diver Nick Day told ABC Radio.
"Screw what you do. We will go on, we will not stop. We will not sit at home. We will
not be afraid. We will go on."
Nine people, including the three Australian victims and two suicide bombers, were killed
in virtual simultaneous explosions at the JW Marriott and the neighbouring Ritz-Carlton
hotels on July 17. The three Australians were at a breakfast meeting at the Marriott when
the bomb went off.
Those attending the morning gathering on Sunday wore red and white ribbons on their
chests to show their determination that life in Indonesia will not change.
Long-time Indonesian resident Steve Barber, who was also in Bali when it was targeted
in 2002 and 2005, knew Senger through his involvement in local football clubs.
"A mate of mine was taken from me a couple of weeks ago and I just came here out of
respect to Craig," he said.
"It has been hard. It has been a tough couple of weeks. But for myself, it is probably
not the first time this has occurred.
"There are a lot of Indonesians who work in hotels such as this one, the Marriott.
They have their lives. They have to get on with our lives too and I think they are really
happy to see us back in their workplace today."
The three victims were farewelled by family and friends in separate memorial services
in Australia last week.

NSW: Gordon Wood trial cage viewing of The Gap cancelled
Eds: reissuing to include Justice Barr's first name Graham
SYDNEY, April 15 AAP - The judge presiding over Gordon Wood's murder trial has cancelled
a `test' viewing of the Sydney cliff where his model girlfriend died.
During a brief mention of the trial in the NSW Supreme Court today, the judge cancelled
Friday's site viewing involving a cage being lowered over The Gap, a notorious suicide
spot at Watsons Bay in Sydney's east.
Crown prosecutor, Mark Tedeschi, QC, had arranged for the "practice view", during which
Justice Graham Barr and the crown and defence legal teams were to make use of the cage.
Wood, who was chauffeur to the late stockbroker Rene Rivkin, is accused of throwing
Caroline Byrne over The Gap.
His trial is set down for July.
Mr Tedeschi previously told the judge it was important for the jury to see the location
where Ms Byrne's body was found in June 1995.
Mr Tedeschi said everything was in place for Friday's viewing, but the scaffolding
work needed to begin today.
But Justice Barr said: "I am calling it off".
He added that if the crown wanted to proceed, it should put in a written proposition
stating exactly why it was necessary for the jury to have the viewing.
The proposal could canvass other means to view the site, he said.
Meanwhile, Wood's lawyer, Michael Bowe, today told the court that late yesterday he
was informed his client would be granted some Legal Aid funding.
This was contrary to an earlier decision on the matter and it was not yet known if
Winston Terracini SC could continue to act for Wood, he said.
Justice Barr said he regarded the matter as one "in which Mr Wood should be represented
by experienced trial counsel".
No future mention date has been set.

WA: Willy-willy, no safety belt contributed to death: report
PERTH, Dec 11 AAP - Dangerous willy-willies and a failure to use safety belts contributed
to the death of a baby and a man in a light plane crash in Western Australia's north,
a safety report found.
The Cessna left a cattle mustering area on Mt Vernon station, in the state's Pilbara
region, on its way back to the homestead, a 10 minute flight away, on September 1, 2006.
On board were the pilot, two adult passengers, a child and a baby sitting on a woman's
lap. It is not known whether the woman was the infant's mother.
A report by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) released today found the
pilot and a man sitting in the front two seats were not using their shoulder harnesses
and the baby was being held by the woman but was not otherwise restrained.
During the flight both the pilot and passengers noticed willy-willies, vortexes of
rising hot air, in the area.
As the plane came in to land it hit turbulence, the pilot lost control and the aircraft
plunged into an almost vertical nosedive, crashing into the ground from a height of about
300 to 350ft, the report found.
The pilot, the woman and the child were injured, and the man and the baby, whose age
and sex have not been released, were killed.
Julian Walsh, deputy director of aviation safety investigations at the ATSB, said the
willy-willies probably led to the crash and the lack of safety belts made serious injuries
more likely.
"There may have been some reduction in the severity of the injuries of the people if
there had been better restraints," Mr Walsh said.
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority has announced it will begin new public education
campaigns on the importance of child restraints and the dangers of flying near willy-willies.

Nation's 3rd-quarter productivity at lowest rate in almost 2 years
WASHINGTON - The productivity of America's workers grew at a 1.8 percent annual rate in the third quarter, the slowest pace in nearly two years, the government reported Tuesday.
The deceleration in this vital economic indicator, however, raised some hope that employers who have squeezed so much efficiencies out of their existing work forces may seek to boost hiring as a way to meet customer demand.
The Labor Department's latest snapshot of productivity - the amount an employee produces for every hour of work - showed that efficiency gains were slightly weaker than the 1.9 percent growth rate first estimated for the July-to-September quarter. The new figure, based on more complete data, marked a slowing from the 3.9 percent productivity pace logged in the second quarter.

Hewlett-Packard board of directors set against breaking up company
SAN JOSE, Calif. - Hewlett-Packard Co.'s board of directors considered on three separate occasions whether to break up the company, but each time directors unanimously concluded it would be best to keep HP together, HP chief executive and Chairman Carly Fiorina said on Tuesday.
Fiorina, who spoke at a twice yearly financial analyst meeting in Boston, did not say when directors at the Palo Alto, Calif.-based computer giant debated a breakup.
Her remarks came in response to a question by Merrill Lynch technology analyst Steven Milunovich, who asked whether breaking up the company would provide greater returns to shareholders.
HP's current business operations encompass laptops and servers, business consulting services, and printers and ink - by far the company's most lucrative division. Wall Street analysts have speculated in recent months that spinning off the printing division could be a windfall for stock owners and senior executives on both sides of the company.
But Fiorina said the company would incur "real costs" if it broke up, and the complicated process could drag on for years.
Chief Financial Officer Bob Wayman also speculated Tuesday that a breakup could create "diseconomies" of scale - the opposite goal of large corporations, which often acquire complementary companies and rivals to spread out marketing, personnel and other fixed costs.

Dual Incomes Boosting Ranks of Young Affluent Households Says Spectrem Report.
What's the driving force behind the increasing wealth of younger Americans? More often than not, it's a dual income family, not a dot-com success story or a bulging stock portfolio, according to a new report from Spectrem Group, an NFO WorldGroup company. Spectrem, a Chicago-based consultant specializing in the affluent and retirement markets, reports that in 2000 there were 3.5 million U.S. households with annual income of $100,000 or more and/or net worth of $500,000 headed by someone under 40 years old. This was an increase of 40% from 1997, when there were 2.5 million young affluent households.
"Nearly three-quarters (72%) of these households had two earners," says Scott Slater, a Spectrem Director and author of the report, "Movin' on Up: A Profile of the Emerging Young Affluent." Slater says that's up from 60% in 1997. Not surprisingly, 83% of the young affluent indicate that earned income is the primary source of their wealth. Among the group, 43% said employer equity contributed to their wealth, while 55% indicate that investment returns were a source of wealth.
Despite their wealth, few of these households have a financial plan, notes Slater. "Only 21% of the young affluent have a financial plan, yet more than half think they could use one," he says. "It's clear from our research that these households benefit from planning," he adds. "Young affluent households with a financial plan have average investable assets of $210,000, more than double the $100,000 average for those without a plan."
The Young Affluent are far more likely than older affluent households to use the Internet for all types of financial activities, the report says. Over two thirds of the Young Affluent use the Internet to conduct some type of financial transaction; around half seek financial information and manage their accounts online; and nearly one third seek investment advice online.
"Movin' on Up: A Profile of the Emerging Young Affluent" is one of several new reports on affluent and retirement market topics published by Spectrem Group. The reports are available online through the company's web site (www.spectrem.com).

Brick Court QC seals Ryanair victory in Gatwick ground charges face-off.
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has ruled that Gatwick Airport's baggage handling and check-in charges are unfair, forcing it to revise the fees.
Nabarro partner Peter Fitzpatrick instructed Brick Court Chambers' Daniel Jowell QC to lead the legal fight for Ryanair against Gatwick Airport.
It argued that charges for check-in and baggage facilities were inherently unfair on clients and breached EU regulations on access to the ground handling market at EU airports.
Under the regulations the managing body of an airport is required to take the necessary measures to ensure that any fee charged for access to airport installations is determined according to relevant, objective, transparent and non-discriminatory criteria.
Ryanair said passengers who booked online and brought with them hand luggage should not be charged the same as those who used airport check- in facilities.
Herbert Smith partner Julian Copeman instructed Mark Hoskins QC, also of Brick Court, for Gatwick.
The CAA upheld the appeal on the grounds that Gatwick's internet check- in charge was not based on objective criteria.
Over time Ryanair had increased its share of passengers carrying no hold baggage but Gatwick had not reviewed its relative check-in charges.
The criteria Gatwick applied to formulating the charges were not transparent and users were unable to gain an understanding of how precisely their charges had been calculated.
However, the CAA rejected claims that the 'bundling' of check-in and baggage related charges was, of itself, evidence of discriminatory conduct.

Abu Dhabi fund hit.
Abu Dhabi fund hit by Madoff scam An Abu Dhabi government-owned fund may have fallen victim to the massive US pyramid fraud that conned investors around the world, reports claimed yesterday. The New York Times said the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) - the world's biggest sovereign wealth fund with assets estimated at up to $875 billion - had indirectly put $400 million into Bernard Madoff's scheme in 2005. "The investment authority had invested approximately $400 million with Mr Madoff, by way of the Fairfield Sentry Fund, according to a profile of the firm that it prepared for a prospective buyer in 2007," the newspaper wrote. "Fairfield Sentry had more than $7 billion invested with Mr Madoff and was his largest investor; now, it says, it is his largest victim." The New York Times said ADIA was one of Fairfield Sentry's biggest investors, and even though it took "two significant redemptions" from the fund in April 2005 and 2006, its $132 million stake the following year still made up two per cent of the fund's assets under management. The level of ADIA's exposure to Madoff's Ponzi scheme at the time of its collapse was not clear, and the authority could not be reached for comment. But Abu Dhabi yesterday set up a new financial watchdog - named as the Abu Dhabi Accountability Authority - to ensure state "resources and funds are managed, collected and expended efficiently", the WAM news agency reported. The UAE is one of the top ten countries looking for information on Madoff, who is now under 24-hour house arrest in New York, according to analysis by DubaiBeat.com on Google search trends.

In particular research is very much skewed towards certain user groups (e. g., students) and platforms (in particular Facebook). Further, implications for a corporate context are discussed. In doing so, three contexts of application are differentiated: Social network sites (SNSs) for 1) recruiting and professional career development, 2) relationship facilitation in distributed work contexts, and 3) interactions with end customers. The authors discuss SNS potentials, implications of existing ISN research and future research opportunities," wrote D. Richter and colleagues, University of Munster.
The researchers concluded: "In summary, they seek to contribute to a better understanding of the phenomenon of ISN and to making available the current state of ISN research for the wider Enterprise 2."
Richter and colleagues published their study in Business & Information Systems Engineering (Internet Social Networking Research State of the Art and Implications for Enterprise 2.0. Business & Information Systems Engineering, 2011;3(2):89-101).

SUPPLY CHAIN STANDARD VIEWPOINT: Back to the future.
The futurists of the 1990s loved ideas like the intelligent fridge or thinking waste-bin - in our digital age perhaps it is time to revisit these concepts which might just transform logistics.
Presentations and workshops may be the key attraction at many conferences, but it is often the unexpected conversations over coffee or lunch that prove the most memorable.
Extended Supply Chain in April certainly had its high points, but for me one of the more memorable events was chatting to Sergio Barbarino who has the prosaic job title of "principal engineer" at Procter and Gamble's Supply Network Innovation Centre in Belgium. With a forward- looking brief, Barbarino has thought through not just the environmental and logistics issues of home delivery, but also changing consumer attitudes and the role of brands. In future, he argues, why shouldn't local delivery become a utility - much like our gas, water and electricity, where consumers can contract with a single provider for all their needs? Rather than have a succession of delivery drivers calling at our doors why not have one van which comes at a pre-set time and will delivery our groceries, internet purchases, pet food, washing powder or whatever? And why not "contract" with our other regular suppliers to provide what we need via this local delivery operator on an annual basis?
Transformed
My dog eats on average 10.5 tins of dog food a week so why not arrange to have 21 assorted tins delivered every other Wednesday throughout the year? The household generally uses two lavatory rolls a week - so why not have 26 dropped at the door every three months? With sufficient such regular orders, manufacturers' production planning and scheduling would be transformed along with better cost management and targeted promotional incentives for consumers buying direct. With a single local carrier collating orders and delivering at a time to suit the shopper, fuel consumption, congestion and traffic pollution would be reduced giving an environmentally-friendly solution that is a win-win for everyone concerned.
The idea, or close variants of it, is not new: what must by now be 20 years ago I remember a presentation from Forrester Research where the speaker (name now long forgotten) argued that the waste-bin of the future would be able to read barcodes and so to tell when he threw away a tube of toothpaste and automatically order another one (he suggested from P&G) which could be sent by post so that he never had to remember to buy the stuff and never ran out. Forrester's futurist scenario saw consumers "contracting" with companies like Procter & Gamble to supply toothpaste, and other necessary but rather dreary commodities, on such an annual basis.
Such concepts as this "intelligent waste-bin" - or the equally intelligent fridge which would tell you when the contents were approaching their use-by date - were favourites with the futurists of the 80s and 90s but rarely turned into reality. Equally popular was the multi-talented milk float providing a daily delivery not just of your milk but of other groceries, internet shopping, pet food, washing powder, etc. That idea didn't really catch on either.
So will Sergio Barbarino's "carrier-as-utility" concept fare rather better? Certainly some of our major supermarkets have attempted to deliver rather more than just your weekly groceries - although these have tended to be their own products rather than those from third parties. Equally Amazon provides a single source for a vast range of goods, although there is no attempt to collate deliveries. From a consumer perspective having a single carrier to deliver everything at a suitable time sounds like bliss - especially for anyone who has ever taken a day off work to wait in for furniture or a "must-be-signed-for" delivery which invariably arrives at around 5pm; or has had to delay supper until late at night because the internet groceries containing the meal's ingredients are a couple of hours past their delivery slot.
Discount
Equally significant is the prospect that such systems would bypass the high street entirely. Buying direct from a manufacturer, or from an online portal which includes primary producers, and "contracting" to have your basic requirements met for a year or six months at a discount would certainly streamline the weekly shopping list and could well prove to be a popular option - especially for those of us who invariably run out of something vital at the wrong moment. It could also be a welcome option for those many suppliers who are becoming rather tired of the aggressive buying policies which certain major supermarkets have had on their margins and profitability.
In the USA vendor managed inventory (VMI), where producers take responsibility for servicing and stocking their products in-store, is of course far more commonplace than here. Translate the VMI concept into a web portal and marry it with a carrier who will collate and deliver everything ordered in a single drop at the ideal time and Barbarino and the futurists at P&G may be on to a winner. Factor in a weekly instalment payment programme so shoppers are not hit with a mega- bill for loo rolls every three months and a network of local carriers with flexible hours competing for the "utility" business and home delivery might just turn out to be rather more fraught than it can be at present - and possibly rather more profitable for all concerned.
