Qld: Hendra death a sad occassion, says Bligh
Premier ANNA BLIGH has extended her sympathy to the family of a Brisbane vet who died
from Hendra virus.
BEN CUNNEEN .. who was in his early 30s .. died in the intensive care unit of the Princess
Alexandra hospital just after 7:00 (AEST) last night.
Dr CUNNEEN was a staff member at the Redlands Veterinary Clinic .. which is still under
quarantine after five horses contracted Hendra virus in late June.
He tested positive to the virus on July 14 and was admitted to hospital two days later.
Dr CUNNEEN is the third person to die from Hendra virus in Australia .. an outbreak
in 1994 claimed the life of trainer VIC RAIL and Mackay sugarcane farmer MARK PRESTON
died a year later after being involved in autopsies of horses.
A female nurse from the Redlands Veterinary Clinic who also tested positive to the
virus .. is being closely monitored after being discharged from hospital.
