NSW: Easter Show kicks off at Homebush Bay

Almost 26,000 people filed through the turnstiles during yesterday's opening day of
the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Royal Agricultural Society chief executive ROGER PERKINS says he is pleased with the
attendance of 25,886, despite numbers being almost half last year's unusually high figure
of almost 50,000.

Mr PERKINS says the reason for the lower attendance is that the 2000 opening day saw
tens of thousands of school children descend on the event because it was the only school
day to coincide with the show.

An Olympic Roads and Transport Authority spokeswoman says trains and buses proved to
be the way to travel to the showground yesterday, with 21,300 commuters cramming onto
public transport.

The show runs until April 19.
